Arcata Community Forest
In 1955, this 2,350 acre forest was dedicated as the first municipally owned forest in the State of California, and was to be “managed for the benefit of all citizens of the city, with attention to watershed, recreation, timber management, and other values” (Humboldt Times, May 15, 1955). Arcata Community Forest is situated east of town and is easily accessed from Humboldt State University. Several trails wind through gorgeous redwood forest, home to over 140 different species of birds, coho salmon, and the illusive California lady’s slipper.
