Waikamoi Ridge Trail

While this easy-to-access hike just off the road to Hana is enjoyable, it is not a native forest. Tree species such as Eucalyptus robusta have been established here long enough to grow to impressive heights and girths, giving one the feeling of being in an old forest. Unfortunately there are no native old-growth forests on Maui which are open to the public on a drop-in basis. The state-owned old-growth preserves are all surrounded by miles of private land, and so are inaccessible unless one has permits. Until new land is acquired, or access is provided for one of the existing reserves, this forest will at least serve as a pleasant place to stroll under a tall tree canopy.
