St. Francis Woods- Independence
Grove Forest Preserve
St. Francis Woods is an old-growth forest within Independence Grove Forest Preserve in Libertyville, IL. The forest is dominated by red and white oak, with several white oaks dating back between 1737 and 1801. Historic aerials from 1939 show roughly 80 acres of forest which remains intact to this day. Other tree species present include hickories, basswood, black cherry and sugar maple.
Independence Grove Forest Preserve is owned and managed by the Lake County Forest Preserves. Centered around a 129-acre lake, this preserve offers a variety of opportunities for outdoor recreation and nature education. Surrounding prairie and woodlands provide a picturesque backdrop for walking, biking, picnicking, fishing, concerts, playground, volleyball, and other fun activities.
