Brigadoon State Nature Preserve

Brigadoon State Nature Preserve is located in Barren County adjacent to the Barren River Reservoir. With assistance from The Nature Conservancy 92 acres of mostly mature forest was dedicated into the preserve system on March 14, 1985. Another 88 acres were dedicated on June 12, 2001. Today a total of 184 acres are protected. The rich woodlands contain an impressive array of spring wildflowers including several species that are considered rare or uncommon. The preserve also provides a habitat for many resident and migratory birds. Brigadoon features mature beech, maple and tulip poplar forest. Owned by the Renfro family from late 1700's until 1960, then owned by one family until acquired as a nature preserve. The forest has never been commercially logged, only some timber cut for family usage.
