Curtis Gates Lloyd Wildlife Management Area
Old-Growth Forest
The Curtis Gates Lloyd Recreation and Wildlife Area- the 600 acre property, about 40 acres of old-growth forest occur in 2 remnant stands on the non-hunted portion of the area, which are collectively known as the Lloyd Woods. Dalton and Brewer (1997) described these woods as the best uncut forest in the Bluegrass Region in north-central Kentucky. Large old-growth trees include tulip poplar, (species) oak, shagbark hickory, black walnut. As old-growth stands have long been exceedingly rare in Kentucky, the Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources has particular interest in managing these woods to preserve them in their natural condition and protect them from the direct and indirect influence of human activity.
