Chapman Forest Wildlands – Chapman State Park
There are more than 1,000 acres of forest interior in this park. Here is a true sanctuary for many species of birds and rare plants, as well as the humans who wish to reconnect with nature. The park's forest types include oak-hickory terraces, steep ravines, bottomland woods, and a rare shell-marl forest which is rich in calcium-loving plants reminiscent of mountain habitats. Many of the trees in this forest are ancient and, although parts of it were selectively logged before it became parkland, it has the look and the structure of an old-growth forest. Some of the trees are of champion size.
