Mill Run Natural Area
The forest at Mill Run is a mixed mesophytic and bottomland forest that features sugar maple, red, white, and scarlet oaks, American beech, shagbark hickory, black cherry and yellow birch Eastern hemlock dominate the stream valley.
Maturing mixed mesophytic forest dominates the steeper southwestern corner of the unit. Maturing bottomland woods occur along the stream valley where the Eastern hemlocks do not grow.
In the spring, wildflowers, which prefer the acidic environment of the hemlock forest floor (trillium, hepaticas, geranium, jack-in-the-pulpit, lady's slippers and other orchids) are abundant. Various species of club moss are also present.
