McCormick Wilderness - Ottawa National Forest

McCormick Wilderness encompasses approximately 16,850 acres. This large area encompasses diverse habitat locally known as the Peshekee highlands which is very hilly habitat with lakes, islands, rocky outcroppings marshes bogs and secluded old growth forest. Dominant tree species includes Eastern Hemlock, Red and White Pine, Aspen, Sugar Maple, Paper Birch and Basswood. Within the McCormick Wilderness is also the McCormick Research Natural Area (RNA) which is an experimental forest that allows research on the most unaltered area within the McCormick Wilderness. The area around and within the McCormick Wilderness experienced heavy logging prior to the wilderness designation in 1987. Therefore, limited stands of “old-growth” are currently present.
