Sturgeon River Gorge Wilderness - Ottawa National Forest

Sturgeon River Gorge Wilderness is a 14,500-acre parcel of land that includes rocky outcrops, steep terrain, rushing rivers, marshes, bogs, wetlands and secluded old growth forests. Dominant species within the wilderness include Eastern Hemlock, Red and White Pine, Aspen, Sugar Maple, Paper Birch and Basswood. The wilderness also includes the Sturgeon River, a federally recognized Wild and Scenic stream. The area around and within the Sturgeon River Gorge Wilderness experienced heavy logging prior to the wilderness designation in 1987. Therefore, limited stands of old-growth are currently present.
