Boyd Tract - Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve
The entire preserve is 930 acres. The Boyd Tract which contains the old growth section is 165 acres, and about 100 acres of that is old-growth forest. Many of the trees on this property are suspected to be over 400 years old with the oldest estimated currently at 470 years. An increment borer was used to date this particular tree back to 1548. This work was done by a graduate student from UNC Greensboro, and the tree was designated at that time to be the oldest known living longleaf pine tree. There is a well-marked trail that passes by the Old Tree.
