College Lodge Nature Preserve

The SUNY-Fredonia College Lodge Nature Preserve, formerly called the Herbert C. Mackie Memorial Camp, is 173 acres of high-quality forest and wetlands, including a core 14 acres of old-growth forest surrounded by 40 acres of historic woodlot recovering old-growth characteristics. Half of the old-growth is upland Hemlock-Northern Hardwoods forest in which Hemlocks have been dated to 442 years and Beech over 250 years, accompanied by elder Sugar and Red Maples, Black Cherry, Cucumber Magnolia and Basswood. The rest of the old-growth is a rare Rich Hemlock-Hardwood Peat Swamp community with incredible plant diversity and deceptively small trees, including Hemlocks dated to over 330 years old and Black Ash to 192 years old. The Preserve’s habitats support more than 500 species of plants, including several rare and endangered species. There are well developed nature trails throughout the forest. The Muir Trail, the Leopold Trail and the Darwin trail go through the upland old-growth.
