Old Growth Trail - Green Lakes State Park

The "Old-Growth Trail" marked with orange trail signs will take visitors into the Tuliptree Cathedral. This may be the tallest publicly owned forest in central New York, with tulip-poplars (Liriodendron tulipifera) well over 120 feet tall. In this small area, some of the hemlocks and tulip-poplars are estimated to be 300 years old. Green Lakes State Park protects about 1,000 acres of old growth, much of it sugar maple on the hillsides around the lakes. Also interesting are the lakeside white cedar groves. Both Green and Round Lakes are rare meromictic lakes with an unusual green-blue color. The park has a beach area that is very popular in the summer.
