South Woods Old-Growth Forest -
Bard College, Montgomery Place Campus
Bard College’s South Woods Old-Growth Forest is 70-acres of untouched old-growth forest, one of only five remaining virgin forests within several hundred miles of New York City. Follow the 1-mile South Woods Trail, an old carriage road, and you will see ancient hemlocks, old oaks and maples plus young beech and pine trees as the land slopes down to the Hudson River’s edge. The oldest tree on the property has been dated to 1735. According to Jacquetta Haley in 1989, South Woods might be the “oldest oak forest in the Hudson Valley” (Wikipedia; J. Haley 1989).
