In the Presence of Giants

Being in the presence of gigantic redwoods is a magical experience- the ethereal tranquility, the fresh smell of earth, and having to crane your neck to view these ancient trees, all combine to overwhelm the senses. Participants certainly felt the same magic as they gathered in early March to celebrate Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve as it was recognized by the Old-Growth Forest Network.

Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve contains truly ancient Sequoia sempervirens, or coast redwood, species. One such tree, nicknamed the Colonel Armstrong tree, is thought to be at least 1,400 years old! Located within the larger Austin Creek State Recreation Area in Sonoma County, California, Armstrong Redwoods is an 800-acre reserve that offers visitors the spectacular chance to view coast redwoods in all their splendor. The reserve contains several self-guided discovery trails, most of which offer stunning views of the coast redwoods, particularly the grove’s tallest tree, coming in at over 310 feet tall.

The inclusion of Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve into the Old-Growth Forest Network wouldn’t have been possible without the help from California State Parks and the local nonprofit, Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods. At an easy 30-minute drive away from Santa Rosa, Armstrong Redwoods is a must see if you live in the area or are traveling through. Due to the strict protections placed on the reserve, this redwood grove will be enjoyed for many generations to come!

Every forest we add to the Old-Growth Forest Network is a gift to future generations. Please consider making a gift today so that everyone has the chance to experience the joy of old-growth forests.
