Baker Woods State Nature Preserve
Baker Woods is one of the best remaining old-growth forest remnants in northwest Ohio. Total acreage for this site is 47 acres with approximately 42 of these being old-growth. There are numerous large trees including shagbark and shellbark hickories, bur, swamp white, white and chinquapin oaks, which dominate the forest canopy. This site is legally preserved as a wet oak-maple forest community with some sections dominated by an oak-maple swamp community. Some of the larger trees at this site are estimated to be upwards of 150- 200 years old. Portions of the preserve are wet through most of the year. The best times to visit are in autumn when it is relatively dry and mosquito-free or in early spring as the wildflowers are blooming.
