Stage’s Pond State Nature Preserve

A portion of the preserve protects a significant oak dominated woodland of about 31 acres with towering mature white oak trees. The remainder of the preserve protects about 30 acres of glacial ponds and uplands that are reverting pasturelands and croplands.  Approximately 40 acres is being maintained as grassland for nesting birds and an additional 50 acres has been allowed to revert (since the 1970's) to forest.

The oak-hickory uplands and open fields support populations of songbirds, quail, pheasant and several hawk species. Stage's Pond is equally diverse botanically. Aquatic, field, woodland and marsh species abound from April to late October, although the spring season offers the most variety in the form of colorful native wildflowers.
