Sweet Root Natural Area
This is not an old-growth forest. But as you make your way back to the rocky areas (less than one mile) you will discover large trees estimated to be over 150 years old. Tulip-poplar, cucumber magnolia, hemlock, white pine, oak, red maple, some ash, some beech. The trail starts out very easy and gets more difficult as you go. Adventurous folks can connect to many miles of rough trails. The area covers 1,526 acres. Many of the original hemlocks have succumbed to the wooly adelgid insect, but hemlocks closer to the parking area were treated in 2006 and most were still living in 20017. A lovely stream accompanies the trail.
