Beaver Creek Hemlocks Conservation Area
The 257-acre Beaver Creek Hemlocks Conservation Area is located on Highway 182 in the Town of Sherman, Iron County. The property protects over 8,160 ft of creek shoreline, 950 ft of bog shoreline, mature & old-growth hemlock- hardwood forest, black-spruce tamarack swamps, vernal ponds, poor fen & wetlands. Major tree species present include eastern hemlock, yellow birch, white cedar and black spruce. No cores have been taken to age these trees exactly, but many of them are very large in diameter and height, indicating they could be very old. Old-growth is very rare in the Northwoods, as less than 1% of its pre-colonization acreage exists intact today. These apex ecosystems are extremely valuable in that they provide a diversified forest structure capable of supporting a greater diversity of plants and animals than younger forests.
Trails and a parking area will be available for low-impact public recreation, including hiking, snowshoeing, backcountry cross country skiing and nature observation. Traditional uses including fishing and hunting are allowed according to established guidelines.
