Burnwood Old Growth Area –
New River Gorge National Park and Preserve
Burnwood Old-Growth Forest at the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve is home to multiple overstory tree species, including Eastern hemlock, American beech, red maple, black gum and four species of oak. Many large-diameter trees are present, and 28 of 50 trees that were cored by scientists pre-date the year 1900. Fifteen of these trees date prior to the year 1800, while five date to c. 1670. The forest is located within the national park and offers a glimpse into a centuries’ old landscape that once covered much of the New River Gorge.
