Johnson T. Janes Nature Preserve
The City of Parkersburg acquired this property by two donations with the understanding that it would be a preserve, which the city council subsequently approved in 1992. The preserve is 94 acres in size and is covered with a diverse hardwood forest of varying species composition and ages. The west edge of the preserve borders Worthington Creek. Much of the preserve is a wet bottomland forest with a tree canopy composed mostly of Sycamore and Silver Maple. Scattered throughout are examples of Cottonwood, Yellow-poplar, Red Maple, and Boxelder. In some of the wetter areas one may encounter stands of Pin Oak. The Canopy ranges from 100- 120’ in height and is about 75 years old. The balance of the preserve on the east edge is quite variable and is in different stages of succession.
